“To get married in Brussels, it is indispensable (except in rare cases) that one of the fiancees is registered in Brussels.
During a first visit to the Marriage Office (at least 3 months before the date of the marriage), one of the future couple has to appear with an ID card. A list of required documents and the time period will be established. The register office records in Belgium, necessary for the file, are requested by the administration of the City of Brussels.
Date of the marriage and marriage file
The date of the marriage can be booked 12 months in advance.
The wedding file itself can be made no earlier than 6 months and 14 days before the wedding date, and 14 days before the marriage at the latest. Because documents sometimes have to come from abroad, it is recommended to come to the counter at least 3 months in advance.
Expenses
The payment of these expenses must be made in cash.
- Wedding book: 25 euro
- Ceremonies in the City hall: these ceremonies are free if they take place on Friday and Saturday morning. For ceremonies between 12 am and 1:40 pm, expenses amount to 250 euro, the inner courtyard and the balcony are then available for the couple.
The waiting period
As soon as the municipal administration has all the necessary documents, it will establish the wedding statement and, at least 14 days later, the marriage can be celebrated.”
